I used a combination 30, 60, 180, 300 and 600 second exposures and used the HDR tool in Photoshop to combine the images. The whole process was complicated by the high number of images I had to throw-out due to clouds that kept floating through the night of 12/30. I ended up throwing out about half the images from that night. HDR imaging is useful when the image contains both very bright features such as the star Alnitak (above the flame nebula) along with the faint detail in the nebula surrounding the horsehead.

Right Ascension: 5h 40m 59s
Declination: -2° 27′ 30″
Distance: 1500 ly

Instrument: WO ZS66 Refractor + Astro-physics Focal Reducer (effective focal length of 270mm); guided with SBIG remote guide head

Mount: Sphinx SXD w/NexSXD + Celestron NexRemote

Camera: ST2000XM + CFW10 filter wheel

Exposure: L: 32.5m; R: 35.5m (bin 2x2); G: 37.5m (bin 2x2); B: 38.5m (bin 2x2); Ha: 60m

Processing: MaxIM DL, Photoshop CS5, Noel Carboni Photoshop Actions

Date: 12/30/2011

Location: Deerlick Astronomy Village, GA

Links to more information about the subject:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horsehead_Nebula

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flame_Nebula

The nebula is composed of a star cluster (IC 5146), an emission/reflection nebula (SH2-125) and finally a dark nebula (Barnard 168). The stars of cluster IC 5146 are scattered through the center of the image. The central red colored nebula is the SH2-125. Barnard 168 is the grey nebula surrounding SAH2-125. The dark nebula extends off to the bottom right in this image. In a wide field image of the same region, you can see the dark nebula trailing off from the cocoon:
http://kreisler.zenfolio.com/p986019179/e1ecea1a1

Right Ascension: 21h 53m 28.7s
Declination: +47° 16′ 01″

Distance: 3300 ly

Instrument: Astro-tech 8" Ritchey-Chretien + Astro-physics x0.67 Focal Reducer (f/5.8); guided with SBIG remote guide head

Mount: Sphinx SXD w/NexSXD + Celestron NexRemote

Camera: ST2000XM + CFW10 filter wheel

Exposure: Luminance: 9x300s; Red: 5x300s; Green: 4x300s; Blue: 5x300s

Processing: MaxIM DL, Color corrected using exCalibrator & Aladin, Photoshop CS5

Date: 6/7/2011

Location: Marana, Arizona

Links to more information about the subject:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IC_5146

http://www.universetoday.com/15412/the-cosmic-cocoon-ic-5146-by-tom-v-davis/

http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap090305.html

During the process the star looses a large amount of material. When astronomers originally called these objects planetary nebula's they thought they were something nearby and were associated with planets. Later astronomers determined they had nothing to do with planets, rather they were associated with dying stars. Some research proposes that the intricate structures seen within many planetary nebula may in fact be due to planets orbiting the dying star. The gas is coming from the star, but the planets may influence the shape of the glowing shell of gas as it expands.

Right Ascension: 19h 59m 36.34s
Declination: 22° 43′ 16.09″

Distance: 1360 ly

Instrument: Astro-tech 8" Ritchey-Chretien + Astro-physics x0.67 Focal Reducer (f/5.8); guided with SBIG remote guide head

Mount: Sphinx SXD w/NexSXD + Celestron NexRemote

Camera: ST2000XM + CFW10 filter wheel

Exposure: Luminance: 29x60s; Red: 8x60s; Green: 7x60s; Blue: 6x60s

Processing: MaxIM DL, Color corrected using exCalibrator & Aladin, Photoshop CS5, Neil Carboni Astronomy Tools

Date: 4/30/2011

Location: Deerlick Astronomy Village, Sharon, GA

Links to more information about the subject:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dumbbell_Nebula

http://seds.org/messier/m/m027.html

http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap040424.html

http://www.universetoday.com/33035/messier-27/

It is composed of images shot using three different narrowband filters. Narrowband filters are designed to capture light emitted by specific types of gas. The three types of filters used for this image are:

Ha - Hydrogen alpha - atomic Hydrogen (red)
OIII - Doubly ionized Oxygen (green)
SII - Singly ionized Sulfur (deep red)

To create a pleasing color image from these three filters, I've used what is called the Hubble color pallet (as in Hubble space telescope). The Hubble pallet maps Ha into blue (instead of red), OIII into green and SII into red. Since none of the original data came from the blue part of the spectrum, the image resulting from this sort of mapping is called a false color image. In reality, the image would be dominated by red with some green tints.

Right Ascension: 6h 33m 45s
Declination: 04d 59' 54"
Distance: 5200 ly

Instrument: Williams Optics Zenihtstar 66 mm (f/5.9) Refractor + WO 0.8x Focal Reducer/Flattener; guided with SBIG remote guide head

Mount: Sphinx SXD w/NexSXD + Celestron NexRemote

Camera: ST2000XM + CFW10 filter wheel

Exposure: Ha: 9x300s; OIII: 9x300s; SII: 9x300s

Processing: MaxIm DL, Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2

Date: 2/11/2011

Location: Jake Mountain Horsecamp, GA

Links to more information about the subject:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosette_Nebula
http://www.seds.org/messier/xtra/ngc/n2244.html
http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap110214.html

More information about narrowband filters and imaging:
http://starizona.com/acb/ccd/advimnarrow.aspx

Hubble Pallet:
http://astroprofspage.com/archives/1500

I don't normally try and image deep sky objects during the full moon, but using the hydrogen alpha filter allows imaging even though the moon light is so bright.

Constellation: Cassiopeia
Right Ascension:
Declination:
Distance: ~6000 ly

Instrument: Celestron C8 (f/6.3) + Meade x0.63 Focal Reducer; guided with SBIG remote guide head

Mount: Atlas EQ-G + EQMOD

Camera: ST2000XM + CFW8a filter wheel

Exposure: Hydrogen-alpha: 39x300s

Processing: MaxIm DL, Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2

Date: 07/24/2010

Location: Deerlick Astronomy Village, Sharon, GA

Links to more information about the subject:
http://www.noao.edu/outreach/aop/observers/ic59.html
http://dg-imaging.astrodon.com/gallery/display.cfm?imgID=5
http://www.astropix.com/HTML/A_FALL/IC59_63.HTM

This is a dedicated astrophotography camera. It uses a 1600x1220 pixel monochrome CCD chip. Color images are created by taking a series of images through various colored filters (Red, Blue, Green and Luminance). The ST2000XM uses and internal auto-guide chip, eliminating the need for a 2nd guide scope and autoguider. The ST2000XM also has a built in cooling system, which will cool the CCD imaging chip to reduce noise during imaging. I'm still sorting out all the steps necessary to process these images, its considerably more complicated than dealing with the DSLR images I've been taking up to this point.

Instrument: Meade SN8 (f/4) + Baader MPCC; guided with internal T237H guide chip

Mount: Atlas EQ-G + EQMOD

Camera: ST2000XM + CFW8a filter wheel

Exposure: Luminance-3x900 second+12x300 second; Red-7x300 second (bin 2x2); Blue-6x300 second (bin 2x2); Green-6x300 second (bin 2x2)

Processing: MaxIm DL, Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2

Date: 2009-11-13

Links to more information:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elephant%27s_Trunk_nebula
http://www.rc-astro.com/photo/id1031.html

This image is a combination of 9x300 second sub-exposures (for a total exposure time of 45 minutes). The image was taken using my 8 inch Schmidt Cassegrain Telescope (f10), with a focal length of 2032 mm. The longer focal length allowed me to zoom in closer to see the nebula. The camera I used was a modified Canon 20D. The camera was modified to make it more sensitive to the red and infrared part of the spectrum, which makes it well suited for imaging the glowing read gas clouds which the Horsehead Nebula sits in front of. I actually had to do very little post processing of the image other than the normal calibration steps, all I applied was a mild lowpass filter and cropped the image slightly.

Instrument: Celestron C8 (f/10)

Mount: Atlas EQ-G + EQMOD

Camera: Canon 20D (modified)

Exposure: 9 x 300 second (ISO 1600)

Processing: MaxIm DL + DSLR

Date: 2008-10-04

Links to more information about the subject:
http://seds.org/messier/xtra/ngc/b33.html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horsehead_Nebula

The super nova that created the nebula occurred in 1054 AD and was recorded by Chinese and Arab astronomers. The supernova was apparently bright enough to be visible during the day as well as night. The star that exploded left a pulsar as well as the expanding cloud of gas you can see in this image. The pulsar is a rapidly rotating neutron star. A neutron star is created when a star gravitationally collapses (during a super nova explosion), forcing the electrons and protons composing the matter of the star to merge together forming neutrons. The neutron star is an extremely dense object, denser than an atomic nucleus, concentrating more than one solar mass in a volume of 30 kilometers across. This image is a combination of 11x5 minute sub-exposures. I've applied a number processing steps in creating the image, including calibrating the individual images, combining them, deconvolution and sharpening to bring out some of the detail in the nebula.

Instrument: Celestron C8 (f/10)

Mount: Atlas EQ-G + EQMOD

Camera: Canon 20D (modified)

Exposure: 11 x 300 seconds (ISO 1600)

Processing: MaxIm DL + DSLR

Date: 2008-10-03

Links to more information about the subject:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crab_Nebula
http://www.seds.org/Messier/M/m001.html
